IST 1st participation in Robótica 2001 - Festival Nacional de Robótica UIP Class ended with a 2nd place among 7 teams.
This year our robot was a modification of the old IQ99. This multi-sensor robot kept its tradition of high reliability (both mechanical and electrical) as well as a great vision-based track detection and following capabilities. Our main problem was the detection of the lit traffic light, as we have chosen to take advantage of the existing top camcorder to segment the light colors, but only a big chunk of white light could be seen, and there was no time to improve the centroid determination from a thresholded image solution, which proved to be the best way to solve the problem.
Concerning the track and tunnel following challenges and the switching between them, IQ2001 did quite well, and in fact was the best robot in these sub-challenges.
