IST 5th participation in the Festival des Sciences et Technologies was a success!
We won the following prizes:
This year, our new challenge
consisted of modifying the software (and some hardware too) of our champion
robot IQ1 to overcome the old and
new competition challenges, especially the need to leave the track and
knock down a ball from the top of a post.
A team of 2 students from IST Licenciatura em Engenharia Informatica e de Computadores , José Lopes and Bruno Câmara did a great job increasing IQ1's speed, finding resuming points after interruptions (once again, with no beacons!), building a previously unexistent ball catching and selection system and, most of all, solving the throw-down-ball problem!.
Here are 2 mpeg files with our robot in action:
The team is supervised by Profs. Pedro Lima and Carlos Cardeira. Last year team member Carlos Marques is also helping as a project advisor.
Check also all the other Portuguese participants in the Festival. This year, the three teams (IST, U. Aveiro, U. Minho) were all distinguished with the first place in the jury prizes for the best robots in the Open, Monotype and Football Robot Classes.
Well, and do not forget about RODITAS, shown with success at the LEGO stand (Carlos Marques and Filipa Menezes, Madame LEGO). This was one of the reasons for the success of our project within a lot of French kids who became our supporters (and even asked an autograph to the team, after the last day performance!).
We were also showing our IQ99 robot in Macau, at the "Teaching Science with Toys" conference, in 1999. Click here to watch a video of the event.
